Hannibal Lecter is a fictional character created by author Thomas Harris. He is most famously known as a brilliant but psychopathic psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer. Lecter first appeared in Harris’s 1981 novel Red Dragon and went on to feature prominently in the subsequent novels The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising.

Lecter has become an iconic figure in popular culture, portrayed in various films, television series, and adaptations. Perhaps the most famous portrayal of the character is by Sir Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs (1991), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor. Other portrayals have included Mads Mikkelsen in the TV series Hannibal (2013-2015), and Brian Cox in Manhunter (1986), the first film adaptation of Red Dragon.
